Going Big: A Large-Scale Art Size Guide by Ronnita Whipple

Large-scale art changes a room. It sets the mood, fills the eye, and becomes the first thing people notice when they walk in. But at these sizes, a few inches makes a big difference, and it’s hard to picture 60"x90" or 100"x150" on your own wall. This guide shows every large size side by side, at real scale, next to me.

Scale you can see

I’m 5 feet 5 inches (165.1 cm), or 65 inches tall. Use my height as your ruler. Every size in the guide is listed as Length (L) x Width (W), with length running floor to ceiling and width running wall to wall.

About the gown

The gown I’m wearing in this photo is one of my wearable art pieces. I handmade it and hand-painted it, with the black bodice fading through soft gray into white. It’s available for purchase on my website.

32"x48" (2'8" x 4')

About half my height. A strong, manageable size for above a sofa, bed, or console table in a standard room.

40"x60" (3'4" x 5')

A true statement piece that still fits most homes. Ideal for living rooms and primary bedrooms where you want the art to lead.

48"x72" (4' x 6')

Six feet wide. This size fills a large wall on its own and works beautifully in open living spaces, dining rooms, and entryways.

60"x90" (5' x 7'6")

Nearly as tall as I am. Made for spacious rooms, high ceilings, and walls that deserve to be the main event.

80"x100" (6'8" x 8'4")

Taller than me by more than a foot. At this size, the art becomes part of the architecture. Best for lofts, double-height walls, and large open spaces.

90"x120" (7'6" x 10')

Ten feet wide. A wall-sized piece for grand rooms, lobbies, galleries, and commercial spaces.

100"x150" (8'4" x 12'6")

The largest size in the guide. Immersive and unforgettable, made for walls with ceilings above 8 feet, event spaces, hotels, and corporate interiors.

Quick tips before you choose

  • Measure your ceiling height first. A standard ceiling is 8 feet (96 inches), so 100" length needs a taller wall.
  • Leave breathing room. Art looks best with space around it, not pressed against the ceiling, floor, or corners.
  • Check the path in. Measure doorways, hallways, and stairwells. A standard interior door is about 80 inches tall.
  • Not sure? Outline the size on your wall with painter’s tape and live with it for a day.

Big art makes a big statement. I hope this guide helps you find the size that feels like it was made for your space.
